هذه المحاضرات نقلت كما هي من دون تعديل من بعض الطلبة الذين يتابعون محاضراتهم At the beginning of heart of darkness, Marlow, the narrator, said to his listeners: “to understand the effect of any experience in the Congo, you ought to know how I got there, what I saw, how I want up that river?” (p.11) In the Thames estuary; five men sit on board, the Nellie: a cursing boat. One is the nameless, the first narrator of the novel, who introduces his 4 men. There are the director of companions (their captain host), a lawyer, an accountant, and finally Marlow, a seaman. While they are waiting for the tide to turn, Marlow tells the others an experience he once had in Africa. As a child he was fascinated by the river Congo. His childhood dream materialized when he obtained the command of a steam boat.
