Everything in your essay should support your thesis statement.
What is a good thesis statement?
It should have or be:
1- A clearly defined opinion or some subject.
2- Asserts one main idea.
3- On something important or worthwhile.
4- The scope and the magnitude of the topic should be limited to fit the assignment for example: if you want to write two pages on smoking, your thesis should focus on something about smoking. If you limit the essay to the effects it should be better.
5- The thesis should be clearly stated in specific terms.
6- The thesis is placed either at the beginning or at the end it depends on the writer.
7- We should have an essay outline (map). Essay map is a brief statement accompanying the thesis that introduces the supporting points to be discussed in the body of the essay.
- Smoking causes cancer (x).
- It might cause cancer.
- Map:
- Smoking
- Relation between smoking and lung cancer.
- Relation between smoking and heart disease.
- Relation between smoking and newborn children.
8- Don’t clutter thesis with expressions such as: I believe, in my opinion or in this essay I will argue. We shouldn’t do this because it weakens our ability to persuade. The ideas in the essay are ours so we shouldn’t put expressions to let the reader know that it is ours. We should be forceful and speak directly, for example: In my opinion, the university library is very poor.
9- Don’t be unreasonable by making irrational or over simplified claims; this will not persuade the reader (unreasonable)
- Most of the professors in this school are unqualified.
